Spotlight Blog Interview: Emma Wood, The Grand Hotel York

The Independent Venue Roadshow (IVR) provides event professionals the opportunity to meet and research independently owned hotels and venues to add to their little black book.

We were joined on the blog by Emma Wood from The Grand Hotel in York, who are the first venue host of our brand new IVR 3 Series this month! Emma gives us a taste of what you can expect from the event and what it's like to exhibit in the Independent Venue Roadshow.

1. What do guests say they love most about The Grand?

Our guests really enjoy the feeling of luxury and opulence when they come to The Grand!

Originally opened in 1906 as ‘A Palace of Business’ for the North Eastern Railway offices, the building still has all of its original character!

With spectacular views of York Minster and the City Walls from our Grand Boardroom and Chairman’s Suite, guests really do feel like they are absorbed in the City’s notorious history and culture when staying or attending an event with us.

The Grand also has great transport links by both rail and car. Just a 3-minute walk from York train station, and with a direct train journey from London taking under two hours, a journey from Manchester in under 90 minutes, and direct train routes to key cities such as Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow, means guest travelling to events or an overnight stay with us need not worry about long, complicated travel arrangements.

 

2. What is one fact buyers or event planners should know about The Grand?

In March this year, The Grand completed the largest stage its £15m development, with the addition of 100 rooms, taking us to the largest bedroom stocked hotel in York!

Other key parts of this development saw the opening of our ‘Arrivals Lounge,’ allowing guest to experience true luxury the moment they arrive at The Grand. We also opened our White Rose Executive Lounge and our Rise Restaurant in June 2017.

Spring 2019 will see the final project under this investment, with the opening of ‘The Grand Cookery School.’ Making The Grand Hotel, Yorkshire’s best address!

3. What is your favourite thing about being a part of the current IVR programme?

This is the first time The Grand Hotel will be part of the IVR programme, and it is really exciting for us!

Allowing us the opportunity to meet with quality buyers, on a national basis means that we will get a great opportunity to spread awareness of The Grand, and talk about all our exciting new developments.

Even better, The Grand are hosting the October IVR programme, which will be a great opportunity to showcase our new developments!

 

4. At CHS, we champion independent venues with the IVR programme. What do you personally think are the benefits of an event planner teaming up with an independent venue?

There are many fantastic benefits of teaming up with an independent venue.

Independent venues allow event planners to be completely creative with their events, and really make them their own. This is not always possible if you are dealing with larger, corporate brands, due to their brand guidelines.

Members of staff that work in an independent venue, are often extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the venue they work in, and tend to focus on making a real connection with their customers, to provide an exceptional experience for them, one that will lead them to return to the venue, time and time again!
