It’s the ultimate countdown - the Conference & Hospitality Show is only DAYS away now. Over the course of the month, we’ve been posting our top tips to help you make the most of your experience at the show. We’re ending it off on a fun note in this one where we’ll giving you our top four tips on how to network at the parties we’ll be hosting at CHS19 - including the Hosted Buyer Party and the After Show Party. Let’s get into it!
1. Practice how you will introduce yourself - have your short ‘elevator pitch’ of who you are and what you do
You will be meeting lots of new people at either the Hosted Buyer Party and/or the After Show Party. It’s a good idea to take a few minutes to think beforehand of your 1-sentence summary of what you do. This way you won’t be struggling or nervous about what to say when you are introduced to someone new. Anyone at the party could be a potential lead so being prepared will be one less thing to think about.
2. Ask for advice or opinions
If you’re struggling for conversation topics with new people and want to avoid the dreaded awkward silence, ask people for their advice or opinions. Be genuine about it and ask them something you would actually care to hear about. You will make a good impression on them, because let’s face it, people love to talk about themselves. Harvard Business School did an experiment that proved that people will see you in a more positive light if you ask them follow-up questions about themselves and make them feel heard.
3. Don’t be too promotional
On a similar note, act naturally and focus on building new connections. Parties aren’t a place to try and close deals or talk too much business - that’s for the actual show itself!
4. Have fun
Most importantly, have fun! People are naturally drawn to others with a positive attitude, so if all else fails, just have a good time and let the connections happen naturally.
